Jennifer is made a Freeman of Newcastle
June 28, 2011
Congratulations to Jennifer Staward on being made a Freeman of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne. Jennifer has the most important job at Wearset (she organises the wages) and has now been officially sworn in as a Freeman at a ceremony held in the Guildhall.
The Freemen of Newcastle is an ancient organisation, dating back to Saxon times, and used to comprise of those who were permitted to carry arms for the defence of the city. It is now primarily aimed at protecting the wonderful parks and green spaces of the city for its residents.
Among the privileges this honour bestows is the right to graze cows on Newcastle Town Moor, something we’re sure Jennifer is keen to take advantage of!
